Unit Theme: Plants and Climate
Activity Title: How Might Elevated CO2 Affect Plants?
Grade Level: 9-12

National Science Education Standards
Science Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry
Abilities Necessary to do Scientific Inquiry: Identify questions that guide scientific investigations; Design and conduct scientific investigation; Use technology and mathematics to improve investigation; Formulate scientific explanations using evidence; Recognize and analyze alternative explanations; Communicate and defend a scientific argument.
Science Content Standard C: Life Science
The Cell: Plant cells contain chloroplasts, the site of photosynthesis. Plants use solar energy to combine molecules of carbon dioxide and water into complex, energy rich organic compounds and release oxygen to the environment.
Interdependence of Organisms: Human destruction of habitats through harvesting, pollution, atmospheric changes and other factors is threatening current global stability.
Matter, Energy, And Organization in Living Systems: The energy for life primarily derives from the sun. Plants capture energy by absorbing light and using it to form strong chemical bonds between atoms of carbon-containing (organic) molecules.
Principles & Standards for School Mathematics
Mathematics Standard 1: Numbers and Operations
Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates
Mathematics Standard 4: Measurement
Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements
Mathematics Standard 5: Data Analysis and Probability
Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data

Standards for the English Language Arts
Literacy Standards
Standard 12: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes.
