National Science Education Standards
Science Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry
  Understandings about scientific inquiry: Different kinds of questions suggest different kinds of scientific investigations. Some investigations involve observing and describing objects, organisms or events.
Science Content Standard B: Physical Science
  Properties of Objects and Materials: Objects have many observable properties including size, weight, shape, color, temperature, and the ability to react with other substances. Those properties can be measured using tools such as rulers, balances, and thermometers.
Science Content Standard C: Life Science
  Characteristics of Organisms: Each plant or animal has different structures that serve different functions of growth, survival, and reproduction.
  Organisms and Their Environments: An organism's patterns of behavior are related to the nature of that organism's environment, including the kinds and numbers of other organisms present, the availability of food and resources, and the physical characteristics of the environment.

Mathematics Standard 4: Measurement
  Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
  Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements

  Standard 5: Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
  Standard 12: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes.
