Unit Theme: Plant Observation
Activity Title: Mystery Plant Identification
Grade Level: 5-8
National Science Education Standards
Science Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry

Understandings about scientific inquiry: Different kinds of questions suggest different kinds of scientific investigations. Some investigations involve observing and describing objects, organisms or events.

Science Content Standard C: Life Science
Structure and Function: Living systems at all levels of organization demonstrate the complementary nature of structure and function. Each type of cell, tissue, and organ has a distinct structure and set of functions that serve the organism as a whole.
Diversity and Adaptations of Organisms: Millions of species of animals, plants and microorganisms are alive today. Although different species might look dissimilar, the unity among organisms becomes apparent from an analysis of internal structures, the similarity of the chemical processes, and the evidence of common ancestry.
Principles & Standards for School Mathematics
Mathematics Standard 3: Geometry
Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric relationships
Use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems
Mathematics Standard 4: Measurement
Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements
Standards for the English Language Arts
Literacy Standards
Standard 5: Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
Standard 7: Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience.
Standard 8: Students use a variety of technological and information resources to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge.
Standard 12: Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes.
