Unit Theme: Plants and Climate
Activity Title: Pick - A - Plant
Grade Level: 5-8

National Science Education Standards
Science Content Standard A: Science as Inquiry
Abilities Necessary to Do Scientific Inquiry: Use data to construct a reasonable explanation.
Science Content Standard C: Life Science
Characteristics of Organisms: Organisms have basic needs. For example, plants require air, water, nutrients, and light. Organisms can survive only in environments in which their needs can be met. The world has many different environments, and distinct environments support the life of different types of organisms.
Organisms and Their Environment: When the environment changes, some plants and animals survive and reproduce, and other die or move to new locations.
Science Content Standard D: Earth & Space Science
Changes in the Earth and Sky: Weather changes from day to day, and over the seasons. Weather can be described by measurable quantities, such as temperature, wind direction and speed, and precipitation.
Science Content Standard F: Science in Personal and Social Perspectives
Changes in Environments: Changes in environments can be natural or influenced by humans. Some changes are good, some are bad, and some are neither good nor bad.
National Geography Standards
Geography Standards
Standard 1: How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective
Standard 4: The physical and human characteristics of places
Principles & Standards for School Mathematics
Mathematics Standard 1: Numbers and Operations
Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates
Mathematics Standard 4: Measurement and Data
Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements
Mathematics Standard 5: Data Analysis and Probability
Formulate questions that can be addresses with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them
Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data
Standards for the English Language Arts
Literacy Standards
Standard 1: Students read a wide range of print and non-print texts to acquire new information.
Standard 5: Students employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
Standard 7: Students conduct research on issues and interests by generating ideas and questions, and by posing problems. They gather, evaluate, and synthesize data from a variety of sources to communicate their discoveries in ways that suit their purpose and audience.
