Foothill penstemon is a small, shrub-like perennial, evergreen in mild climates, with a low, neat habit, 1 to 1 1/2 ft. high. Showy multitudes of 1 in., blue or purple to nearly magenta flowers bloom among dark-green foliage.

Penstemon means five stamens in Greek. Four of the stamens are fertile (make pollen) and one is sterile. The common name of beard tongue comes from the tuft of hairs on the sterile stamen resembling a beard.

A rounded perennial shrub that varies in height from 10 cm-1.5 m tall (4 in- 5 ft). The upper surface of the narrow, dark green leaves are hairless but often sticky (hence the name of the plant!) The flowers are tubular at the base with five broad lobes (two above and three below). The color of the flowers varies -- petals can be white, yellow-tan, yellow, orange, or red.
