Named for the cone-shaped center, this prairie plant blooms from July to September. The flowers form in a cone that is surrounded by purple rays. It grows from 2 to 5 feet tall.

Identification hints

Eastern purple coneflower prefers dry soil.  It is similar in appearance to other Echinacea with purple flowers.  To tell them apart, look at the leaves. Smooth coneflower (E. laevigata) has lance-shaped leaves while Eastern purple coneflower leaves are heart-shaped. Broader, shorter lanceolate leaves along the stem differentiate E. purpurea from Black sampson / Purple coneflower (E. angustifolia).
