Identification hints

American beautyberry has opposite, green leaves (hairy below) with very prominent veins. The flowers are small, lavender, and grow in clusters in the axils of the leaves. The flowers will develop into bright purple to pinkish colored berries. It is a shrub found mainly in the southeastern United States.

American beautyberry flowers between April and October in many Southern states. It is a very common ornamental shrub in landscaping. The fruits of beautyberry have been used in jams and are enjoyed by many species of birds.
