The Colorado Native Plant Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to furthering the knowledge, appreciation and conservation of native plants and habitats of Colorado through education, stewardship and advocacy, We have 6 chapters covering all parts of Colorado. We also have 10 active committees where volunteers help our society fulfill its mission and goals, including annual conference, board of directors, conservation programs, education of the public, field studies, horticulture, restoration, media, scholarships and research. Our members number 1230, and we reach over 8300 native plant enthusiasts through Facebook and Twitter.
The Colorado Native Plant Society has been involved with Budburst for a number of years with a program we have created centered on documenting what native plants are being grown in gardens across Colorado, and the phenology of selected plants in native plant gardens. We also are involved in monitoring pollinators. We have an active field trip program where we document plants in popular natural areas, trails, and parks. We also have recently formed a committee to work on validating field data from the iNaturalist program, which we see as complimentary to our Budburst project. We would like to expand our participation in Budburst and give our budburst program a higher profile. We are also coordinating with other organizations in Colorado that are participating in Budburst, such as county open space programs. We hope to use our status as a partner to promote greater participation in Budburst across our state. Several of us have been maintaining Budburst records for a number of years. We would like to use our presence on Budburst webpage to recruit more Colorado residents to participate in our program so that we could help with training and motivation for participating, and to identify more data sets on plant phenology in Colorado. We presented a webinar on Budburst and phenology science for over 30 volunteers a few months ago, and have been doing virtual talks on phenology to different organizations. We would like to follow this up with other webinars, special events and other activities to promote our Budburst program.
Becoming a part of Budburst is easy—and important. When we all contribute to conservation efforts like this one, we’re one step closer to preserving the planet we share.
