HABITAT
Usually growing in wetlands such as swamps or bogs, but occasionally found in non wetland habitats such as oak woodlands.
ATTRIBUTES
Leaves
Leaves are about 3" long by 1" wide and oval-shaped, growing with just one leaf per node (alternate). Leaves are bluish green in summer, turning red to purple in the fall.
Flowers
White bell-shaped flowers are borne in loose drooping clusters, and flowers typically appear before the leaves.
Fruits
Fruit is a fleshy blue berry, the same as the commonly cultivated blueberry.
Bark
Bark of older stems appears peeling off. Young twigs are often red or green.
Bloom Time
Blooming May to June.
