HABITAT
Typically found growing in rich open woods, hillsides and stream banks, in moist to dry soils.
ATTRIBUTES
Leaves
2-4" long, wedge-shaped leaves are arranged opposite one another on the stem. The leaf has fine teeth along the margin, is pointed at the tip and rounded at the base. The leaf stalk (petiole) is slightly winged. When new, they are reddish-green and covered in fine hairs, but when mature they are bright green and smooth, with small black dots beneath.
Flowers
Flowers are found at the ends of the branches in tight 2-5" wide clusters. Individual flowers are just 1/4" wide, with 5 white petals, five stamens that alternate with the petals and extend past the throat of the flower.
Fruits
Fruits is blue-black and juicy with a flat oblong stone inside.
Bark
Bark is reddish to gray-brown, breaking into small scales. New twigs are pale green with small rusty hairs, but soon become smooth and reddish brown.
