Standing only 1 foot tall, Brome-like sedge can be found in wetlands throughout most of the northeastern quarter of the United States. It tolerates periods of being submerged and prefers some shade over full sun.

Identification hints

Flower stems (1-2 feet tall) appear April into May, changing from green to tawny brown, attracting birds and butterflies.

Unlike most sedges, which spread by runners, Brome-like sedge forms single clumps which expand slowly in size. Mature clumps take on a gently arching, hummock-like shape, and can grow to 12" in height with a 20" spread.
