Identification hints

With clumps standing  2 ft. tall, this plant can be found in wet soil or water.  Each stem bears clusters of very small, greenish-brown, scaly flowers; the clusters diverge from a point on the side of the stalk near the top. Common rush can be distinguished from most other rushes by the absence of alternate leaves along its soft stems.

Did you know?

Muskrats feed on the root stalks, and birds find shelter among the stems. The tiny seeds cling to the feathers or muddy feet of ducks and other wetland birds. In this way these animals help distribute this rush to new wetland sites.
