Purple pitcherplant is the most widely distributed pitcherplant in North America. Each leathery leaf forms a rosette in the shape of a pitcher, collecting both rain water and insects.

Identification hints

Flowers bloom on 12 inch stalks from May through August, resembling deep red daffodils. It prefers wet, boggy soil.

This plant is carnivorous. The pitcher collects water and traps ants, flies and spiders as prey.  Prey are broken down by both plant enzymes and bacteria.
