This upright perennial grows in clumps 2 to 4 feet tall and 1.5 to 3 feet wide. It blooms July to September in rich woods, at the base of bluffs, and along streams.

Identification hints

Garden phlox sports deep green, lanceolate, conspicuously veined leaves on stalks. When in bloom, it has pink to purple and sometimes white tubular flowers with 5 flat petal-like lobes. The flowers grow densely packed in large domed clusters.
