Linear, smooth edges with fine hairs, the leaves are longer at the base and become smaller as they ascend the stem. Numerous white daisy-like flowers with yellow centers appear on flowering stems, there are also needle-like bracts on the flowering stems.

Blooming late summer to fall the heath aster grows 1 to 3 feet tall and 1 to 1.5 feet wide in open woods, prairies, along railroads and roadsides.
