Identification hints

Stems and leaves of milkweeds exude a milky sap when broken. Purple Milkweed looks similar to common milkweed but flowers are more deep purple and leaves more pointed.

HABITAT
Oak savannas and woodlands, edges of prairies near woodlands, open woods.
ATTRIBUTES
Leaves
Leaves opposite each other on the stem, 6"x3", sometimes curling upwards on the margins. Lower surface of the leaf slightly hairy.
Flowers
Many-flowered umbels about 2"-3" across that become darker purple as they mature.
Fruits
Seed pods are smooth instead of warty like the common milkweed pods.
