HABITAT
Grows in riparian areas near rivers, streams, and wetlands.
ATTRIBUTES
Leaves
The leaves are cordate (heart-shaped) with coarsely toothed margins. Green leaves turn golden yellow in autumn.
Flowers
Flowers in drooping, cylindrical clusters (catkins). These plants are dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Male flowers are often pink-red in color and female flowers white to yellow and green.
Fruits
Fruits are egg-shaped, green, and arranged like loosely clustered grapes. They split to release small seeds attached to tufts of cotton-like hairs.
Bark
The bark is smooth in younger trees and becomes cracked with age. Mature trees have grey-white bark
