Identification hints

The leaves on the Sweet cherry are oval-shaped with a distinct point near the top, 3-6 in long and 2-3 in broad with toothed edges, and more than 8 pairs of veins. The leaves are the best feature for distinguishing between Sweet and Sour cherry trees. Sweet cherry flowers are produced in early spring before new leaves emerge. Each flower has five pure white petals. The fruit is bright red to dark purple when mature in midsummer and is variably sweet to somewhat bitter when eaten fresh.
