Identification hints

Sour cherry leaves are 2 to 5 inches long, oval to obovate (egg-shaped with the narrow end attached to the stalk). They have toothed edges and less than 8 pairs of veins. The leaves are the best feature for distinguishing between Sour and Sweet cherry trees. Sour cherry flowers are white with 5 petals, 3 to 5 per cluster, and appear in mid-spring.They tend to flower before their leaves fully emerge in the spring. Sour cherry fruit is sweet, dark red to black, 1/2 to 1 inch across, and may be clustered on spur shoots. The fruit matures in early to mid summer.

Did you know?

Sour cherries are well known for being a main ingredient in desserts. They are also commonly used in soups, salads, pork dishes, jams and jellies, and beverages. Sour cherries are high in antioxidants and may be useful for alleviating sleep issues due to their high levels of melatonin, a compound that plays a critical role in regulating our sleep cycle. Current research is examining if sour cherries could also be helpful in managing inflammation and pain.
