This is a common shrub in coastal forests. Leaves are small, dark and leathery, with finely toothed (serrated) edges. Its dark blue berries usually fruit later in the season than the red huckleberry, and persist into the winter.
Evergreen huckleberries provide a tasty food source in October and November when the berries ripen. They are often collected and made into jams and jellies. The flowers of this shrub are small, urn-shaped and bright pink in color.
