Identification hints

The flowers come out after the leaves appear. Many parts of the plant have short bright red hairs, more prominent on the younger parts of the plant.

Did you know?

Asimina is the only temperate genus of the otherwise tropical and subtropical family Annonaceae. Asimina obovata is found only in the state of Florida.

HABITAT
Generally found in dry areas such as pine scrub, hammock edges, oak-pine woods, coastal dunes, and sand ridges.
ATTRIBUTES
Leaves
2-4" long leaves alternate along the branches and leaves are widest above the middle of the leaf (obovate). Leaves have bright red hairs on the leaf stalk, and on the leaf veins, especially the young ones.
Flowers
Sweet lemon scented flowers grow at the ends of new branches. Flowers droop downward and have 6 creamy white petals and 3 sepals (<.5"). The outer whorl of petals are large (1.5-2.5"), the inner three petals maroonish bases and are half the size of the outer whorl or less. Flower stalks and the sepals also have bright red hairs.
Fruits
Fruit is a yellow-green berry up to 4" long with a few shiny brown seeds less than 3/4" long.
Bloom Time
Generally blooming late winter to early summer.
