Introducing Budburst and Community Science

Use and customize materials contributed by Dr. Emma Oschrin, and Dr. Pamela Hanratty at Indiana University to show students how citizen/community scientists have contributed to the field of phenology. Materials were developed for classes participating in Budburst's Phenology and Climate Project.

Phenology and Citizen Science Reading

  • This Bioscience Magazine article by Amy Mayer describes how volunteers have historically contributed to scientific studies by documenting the timing of phenological events.

Budburst 2011 Project Summary

  • This report presents Budburst data showing the advancement of spring bloom times for a number of North American plant species.

Assessment questions

  • These assignments include questions to encourage reflection and assess student understanding of the readings listed above.
